MESSAGE FROM SECRETARY DESK

Dear SPG Members,

It gives me an immense pleasure as Secretary to be very humbly associated with the activities of prestigious SPG- India.  It is heart warming to see the SPG working towards playing a pivotal role in large scale integration of Geoscientists, cutting across disciplines and providing a platform to launch programs for training, expositions of emerging cutting edge technologies and most importantly providing continuing education to all its members with the objective of keeping its members abreast with the technological developments.

The membership of the society grew progressively from a couple of hundreds in 1993 to more than 1200 (which includes Life, Annual & Student membership) today. To enable coordination of activities across the country, regional chapters were constituted at places viz., Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad Jorhat, Kolkata, Mumbai & Vadodara. These regional chapters are engaged in expanding the technical and professional horizons of the society.  The first chapter outside India, North American chapter of the society was inaugurated at Houston, USA in the year 2002 amidst the large congregation of Indian American Geoscientists.

With the objective of supporting students pursuing geosciences, student sections were established at IIT- Roorkee, Indian School of Mines-Dhanbad, Kurukshetra University, Cochin University, Andhra University- Vishakhapatnam, NGRI -Hyderabad, IIT- Kharagpur , Banaras Hindu UniversityVaranasi, IIT Bombay & Delta Studies, Vishakhapatnam . These student chapters have emerged as an effective mean of promoting geosciences as a subject and training students.

New website of SPG has been launched with all the possible best in class facilities but still some legacy data is being loaded through back end processes. Once the website is fully functional, each member would receive a password from us.

SPG India during 2008 took an active & lead role at SEG conference at Las Vegas. Our beloved President spearheaded the delegation and also signed a MOU for SEG-SPG Joint Program office in Mumbai. Modalities are being worked out by both teams. A woman research scholar was given an exposure at SEG conference at Las Vegas and all her expenses were met by us. SPG India could also show case its activities at Petrotech 2009 in New Delhi.

Beside several programs undertaken by regional chapters, SPG India could successfully conduct several lectures by distinguished speakers like Dr Mrinal K. Sen  Dr. Gopal R Amruthapuri and Mr. Bouska(SEG-DL) at various locations in India with an active participation of various E&P Corporates and several young budding students with great enthusiasm.

Since 1994 the society has organized seven Biennial International Conferences & Exhibitions. As the Secretary of SPG, India, I would like to welcome all members to participate actively in SPG forthcoming event "HYDERABAD 2010" i.e. the 8th International Conference & Exposition on Petroleum Geophysics scheduled to be held from 1-3 February, 2010 at HICC, Hyderabad with the theme Geophysical Challenges in Matured to Frontier Basins- Geophysical Solutions.

“Hyderabad 2010” is likely to have a participation of more than 1600 delegates, comprising of Indian & overseas Geoscientists, Engineers, Academicians, Policy makers and Industry leaders. The expositions would definitely serve as a window for the candid display of recent and improved products, processes, state-of-art technologies and the latest on equipment and services from leaders in petroleum industry. This may well serve as a gateway for the introduction of cutting-edge technology to the Indian E&P Industry.

III wish all the members of SPG, India around the country a very grand success in their endeavours and looking forward to hearing from each one of you on a regular basis.

Warm regards,

Rohit Sinha

Secretary, SPG, India
