The biennial national level geosciences symposium organized by the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay 'Protolith17' saw active participation of students from various Universities/institutes from across the country. The event was conducted as part of outreach activities of the Earth Science Association (ERSA), the umbrella for the local chapters of SEG, SPG, AAPG, SPE and SPLWA. Almost 170 students from 17 Institutes participated in this three-day symposium that included thrilling events, enlightening seminars delivered by stalwarts from industry and academia, and 13 well structured workshops by the faculty of the Department as well as 1 workshop by Schlumberger. Our esteemed sponsors and their generosity and cooperation was instrumental for the execution and success of this symposium. We would extend our heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors ONGC, SPG, IIG and ISR in this regard.

His inaugural speech was not just inspiring for all the budding aspirants present for the symposium but also it was enlightening in terms of the knowledge he imparted to the audience. We were absolutely honoured to have him in our presence.
On the second day, we have another esteemed personality from the oil Industry Shri M Ayyadurai, Executive Director and Basin Manager, Western Offshore, ONGC who delivered a special invited seminar on the Geological history of the western offshore basins. It was very informative and provided the audience an idea about the different exploration datasets and strategies employed for petroleum prospecting. It gave us an idea about the scale of operations that are carried out and the amount of data processing required to gain valuable insights about our natural resources. It was really humbling experience for us to have him amidst us.
On the third-day, we had the SPG-sponsored talk by Sri C V Rao, GM, ONGC and presently the vice-president SPG on the Sub-Basalt Imaging. The talk was very engaging and gave the glimpses of various advanced seismic data acquisition and processing techniques applied for imaging sub basaltic terrains and the interpretations derived from those datasets. Audience got valuable insights about the upcoming and latest technology and the related research behind these developments. It provided us with an idea about the level of research and development employed in the Industry.

Brief: "Intern talk 2014" is an Initiative of the SPG ISM Student Chapter in which we provide a brief idea to the 1st year students about the importance of internships and research project in Geophysics. This year a power point presentation session was also included, where seniors presented their work done in previous summer internships. Brief: The Guest Lecture organised by the SPG ISM Student Chapter was scheduled on the beginning week of the New Year 2015 with a positive notion towards the students. It was focused mainly on the "Seismic Migration" which is an important step in Seismic Processing. Mr. S. Dutta has delivered a wonderful lecture starting from the basics to the latest technologies used in Migration. The lecture was followed by student-teacher interaction. The response of the students are overwhelming. Besides academic beneficiary, it has helped students to interact with the professionals and learn from them.

Brief: On 18th of January, 2015, SPG India, ISM Student Chapter has organised two consecutive lectures for the students of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The 1st lecture was delivered by Mr. Tanmaya Bhanja from IRS, ONGC Ahmedabad on "Reservoir Geophysics". The lecture comprises of various properties of the reservoir, its characterization and different case studies. The Lecture was very enthusiastic and helpful for the young minds. For the 2nd lecture we were very honoured to have Mr. Indresh Kumar, Scientific Officer C, Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, Hyderabad for an inspiring lecture on "Controlled Source Audio Magnetotellurics".

(Society of Petroleum Geophysicists) and EAGE (European Association of Geophysicist and Engineers), PDPU, organised an introductory session on 26th august 2014 for the budding petroleum engineers of first year. The session received an overwhelming response. The attendees were keen to know about petroleum sector and were excited to plunge into this relatively obscure field of engineering.
The session began with an introduction on each chapter, their objectives, roles and the benefits that students can reap by being a part of each one of them. Students were given a brief introduction on fundamentals of Geology and petroleum science. Students were given hand specimens of rock for examining their features.
The session was interactive and the organisers were kept engaged by an inquisitive crowd. The questions ranged from prospects in petroleum industry to terms of membership of the chapters. The students were apprised of oil and gas industry. The session concluded with a Quiz focussing on basic elements of petroleum science and industry. The quiz had a preliminary and a final round. The winners were given free membership and the runner up team received accolades.
The students seemed so eager to join these chapters that there was a rush for registration after the session culminated. The committee wished everyone of a very successful career in petroleum academics and industry. We convey our sincere gratitude to all the stakeholders.
It is said that logging is the eye of Oil and Gas industry. The student chapters of SPG, EAGE, SEG and AAPG in PDPU organized Well Log Interpretation Workshop on 6th September in collaboration with Institute of Reservoir Studies (IRS) ONGC. The workshop received an overwhelming response with an attendance of more than 150 students of PDPU.
The event was graced by eminent Geophysicists and Geologists from ONGC IRS and faculties from PDPU. We were truly honored and privileged to have Mr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Executive Director and Head IRS ONGC. He was accompanied by
The session began with a talk on Geo-cellular modeling by Mr. Indrajit Dasgupta. He talked about various parameters of static and dynamic modeling along with the assumptions involved in various models. The next talk was by Mr. A.P.P. Singh, Dy. SG (wells) and he presented on an Overview of Well Log Data Acquisition.
This encompassed history of logging and its evolution, role of logging in Oil and Gas industry. He detailed various logging techniques and tools used for open hole, cased hole and production logging. He explained working principles, elicited the parameters measured and mentioned the applications of electrical logs, porosity logs, formation structure logs, pressure logs, side wall coring, depth correlation logs, production logs and high tech logs ( DSI, Formation Imager, NMR and CHFR tools).
The entire session was highly interactive and the curiosity and inquisitiveness of students was appreciable. The experts from IRS were pleased to reply to queries from students and clarified their doubts. Mr. Singh continued on tirelessly and explained the importance of cement evaluation, perforation, plug setting, cutter, back off services, shaped charges.
He ended with a brief on importance of production logging and production logging tool string (telemetry cartridge, Gamma, CCl, Pressure, Hydro, Density, Temperature, centralizer and spinner). The seminar continued and the post-lunch session started with a very interesting talk on Formation Evaluations by Mr. Rajesh Kumar CG (Wells).
He spoke about fundamentals of well log interpretation and parameters calculated by using well logs. The properties that can be measured by logs are porosity, shaliness, density, water saturations etc. He reiterated the importance of calibration of tools which ensures good quality log data. He talked about effects of drilling mud, depth alignment, hole size, hole rugosity, barite effect, salinity and temperature on log data. He then talked about flow profile and casing/tubing caliper, etc. A test was conducted to check the abilities of students on well log interpretation and students were asked to calculate various parameters. The logs were tough to interpret but when they were discussed by experts the bstudents found the answers explicit and manner of explanation was lucid. Students in small groups discussed the answers and inferences with instructors.
Finally, Mr. P.P. Deo talked about petroliferous basins of India (Assam, Bombay, Cambay, Cauvery, Krishna Godavari, and Tripura Cachari) their properties, reserves and production history. As the scale changes so does the picture. He talked about vertical resolution and depth of investigation of logging tools. He also delved upon porosity and permeability variations in sandstones and limestones. He gave us the microscopic and macroscopic picture of reservoirs. He also delineated coring and reservoir characterization. He showed various images of cores and oil samples. The seminar breached all timelines and deadlines but neither the instructors nor the students lost energy and eagerness to learn and share their viewpoints. Mr. Deo ended the workshop on a philosophical note by and urged the students to imbibe and apply their knowledge as an “integrated whole”. The workshop concluded with final words of appreciation from Mr. P.P. Deo, Dr. Ashish Sarkar (Faculty at SPT) and Dr. Uttam K Bhui (Faculty at SPT). URJAUDAY organised VIVARAN, a competition to judge the ability of participants to understand and interpret Well Logs in Annual Technical Fest of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), TESSERACT.
The event was powered by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) - Well Logging Services, Ahmedabad. It was judged and presided by Shri. Prem Kumar Chawla, Senior Chief Geophysicist, ONGC-WLS. The event kicked off by a Quiz on fundamentals of Well Logging and Petroleum Industry all the questions were based on Geology, Geophysics, and Basic Tool physics related to logging and Formation Evaluation.
The top five teams from Round 1 (Prelims) made it into the Round 2 (Finals).The Prelims was conducted by Kumar Abhishek Singh and Sudarsan Sai G. Later on the Round 2 (Finals) was conducted by Shri. Prem Kumar Chawla where in the first stage certain theoretical and conceptual questions based on Well Logging were put to the five finalists, in the second stage Well Logs were given and finalists were asked to identify and Interpret Well Logs given to them and were judged on their acumen to identify formation parameters and finally there was a tie between two teams for second position, even after tie breaker round the tie existed and at judge's discretion both teams were declared as joint winners for second position.

The event was very well received by the students with participation of 70 students from various colleges from all over INDIA like UPES-Dehradun, DIT-Dehradun, ISM-Dhanbad, MIT-Pune and finally PDPU. The students found the judge Shri Prem Kumar Chawla very lively and interactive and appreciated his depth of knowledge on the subject and expressed their desire to be part of this kind of event in future.
On March 31, 2015 SPG Student Chapter IIT Roorkee organised a guest lecture by Dr. Rakesh Walia at the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee. The topic of the lecture was Broadband Seismic Data. Dr. Walia is at present Country Manager and MD of CGG India. He was accompanied by Mr. Hemant Kumar, Technical Business Development Manager-Asia Pacific, CGG. The lecture was attended by around 50 Geophysics students and was graced by presence of faculty members.
Mr. Walia began his lecture by introducing the basics of marine survey, ghosts and broadband seismic. In seismic exploration broadband refers to a wider band of frequencies being recorded than in conventional seismic exploration. In the marine case the conventional acquisition system is said to give a useable bandwidth of typically between 8-80 Hz, whereas broadband seismic systems claims to give useable frequencies from as low as 2Hz up to 200Hz or more for shallow targets.
The additional low frequencies provided by broadband data means that a low frequency model from the well is not required for inversion, resulting in more quantitative results and higher confidence away from the well locations. Broader bandwidths produce sharper wavelets without side lobes to provide high-resolution imaging of important shallow features such as thin beds and small sedimentary traps. Lower side of frequency spectrum, i.e., 2-10 Hz decreases side lobes of Ricker wavelet (source wavelet). No horizons are mapped if this frequency is missing. Higher side of spectrum enhances the spikiness of Ricker wavelet and thus enhances resolution power of thinner beds.
He further talked about deep towed curved streamer profile, which is optimised for each marine survey, to maximum bandwidth. The streamer is towed at variable depths ranging from 7.5m to 50m. This enables to capture frequencies down to as low as 2 Hz and reduces weather related noise thus extending the survey-operation window.
Curved streamer profile provides better compensation of ghost notch for 6-35 m. With broader bandwidth and strong low frequencies, the images of sub-surfaces are rich in details enhancing interpretation and reservoir characterisation. He further mentioned about usage of broad source, multi-level airgun arrays. With curved streamer and broad source, the data is almost fully free from ghost (both source and receiver), extending the bandwidth beyond 6 octaves. This technique offers broadest attainable frequency spectrum, the data is of superior S/N ratio with improvement in depth penetration and illumination enabling better seismic inversion, strategic drilling and completion decision reducing uncertainties.

Cognizance is the annual technical festival of IIT Roorkee which provides a platform for talents within the country to showcase their skills. The Department of Earth Sciences contributes to Cognizance with its various events at departmental stage (which we also refer to as Geosynergy). Spotlight In this event, participants are given a problem statement, and are encouraged to provide a novel solution to the given problem. This year's case study involved helping out Ministry of Defence and Government of India to build a "RADICAL DEFENCE SYSTEM" against terrorism.
Geo-modeling It is on-the-spot model making contest. It is a team event where participation has to be in a team of two. It tests the mettle by making the model according to the given problem statement.
We got tremendous response from students all over the country. The craze for Geosynergy can be estimated from the number of registrations this time- 198.We were glad to get participation from colleges in South India, too. From all the abstracts received, a fixed number were shortlisted for the second round where the participants have to give a presentation in front of our judges.
