Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), Chennai Chapter organized a Technical webinar on “Deepwater Depositional Systems and Processes” for Geoscientific fraternity

SPG Chennai chapter is continuously engaged in conducting series of lectures& Webinars from National & International speakers on various topics across the disciplines to benefit its Geoscience Fraternity. The efforts of SPG Chennai chapter have significantly helped its members to get exposed to the state of the art practices in the industry and the Technological advancements in API of G&G data. In line with above, a technical webinar on “Deepwater Depositional Systems and Processes” by Shri K.Vasudevan, Ex-ED-ONGC was organized on 22nd March 2024. Shri K. Vasudevan, Former Executive Director, ONGC & Visiting professor, IIT Bombay, delivered the technical lecture in proficient manner.

Shri K. Vasudevan has 36 years of rich experience in Basin Analysis, Prospect Evaluation, Sequence Stratigraphy of Clastics & Carbonates and Advanced Reservoir Characterisation. He served at the capacity of Executive Director, Basin Manger of Western Offshore Basin,Mumbai. He has avidly contributed in Geological operations in high pressure wells of West Bengal Basin, Geological field mapping in Mizoram &Tripura fold belt, interpretation of Tripura fold belt, West Bengal Basin, A & AA fold belt, Ramnad Acreage-Cauvery Basin &Mumbai High and adjacent areas.

The webinar session was started with the welcome address by Smt. Srilata Mahapatra, GGM – Head Geophysical Services & President–SPG, Chennai Chapter, followed by opening remarks by Shri PS Rautela, CGM- Officiating Basin Manager, Cauvery Basin.

In her welcome address, Smt Srilata Mahapatra has welcomed the participants and conveyed the importance of Deep water depositionalSystems and Processes. She highlighted that this topic is much relevant for deep and ultra-deep water exploration and need of the hour as we are venturing into the deep and ultra-deep water regime. She outlined that this informative webinar will not only guide all Geoscientists but would also educate all about Deep water depositional system, environment and processes.

Shri K. Vasudevan, Ex- ED,ONGC & visiting professor, IIT Bombay delivering his Lecture

The focus of the talk was on understanding the Depositional Systems and Processesof sedimentation in deep and ultra-deep water. He talked about deep water sediments, products and identification in seismic. He discussed about subaqueous environments, Passive and active margins, different types of flow on deep water sedimentation, Controls of deep water sedimentation. He emphasized Sea level changes, supply of sedimentation, Earthquake and Changes in dispersal system. He explained different deep water process i.e mass transport process and relationship between depositional products, slope angles.

He also explained different slope processes i.e. rockfall, sliding and slumps. The talk presented different slope products, detailed process of debris flow, grain flow, liquefied flows and turbidity current. He emphasized about principal architectural elements i.e wedges, channels, lobes, sheets, chaotic mounds. He explained about 6 deep-water products and their visualization in seismic i.e. MTD, Channels- Channel geometry & process, Debris flow, Sediment waves, Submarine fan.

Glimpses from the webinar session

The webinar session was attended by members of SPG from across almost all the work centres of ONGC and the Geoscientists from GPS, Chennai, KG-PG Basin, Cauvery Basin are attended from 11th floor conference Hall, CMDA, ONGC. The lecture was well appreciated and praised by one and all for its contents and thoughtful discussion provided by the presenter. During the webinar session participants actively participated and in the end discussions were held wherein participants asked various thought provoking questions related to Deep water sedimentation and process.

Vote of thanks was presented by Shri Lakshman Katherla, DGM (Geophy-S), Joint Secretary, SPG-Chennai and Executive Member SPG, Shri Sukhendu Maity, Sr.Geophysicist(S) aptly compered the session.
