On 09 April 2026, the SPG–KUGS Student Chapter of the Department of Geophysics, Kurukshetra University, organized a seminar on “VSP (Vertical Seismic Profiling) Data Acquisition and Interpretation for Oil and Gas Exploration.” The programme aimed to enhance students’ understanding of advanced geophysical techniques and their applications in subsurface exploration. The Department of Geology was also invited to participate in the session, making it an interdisciplinary academic interaction
The session was delivered by Dr. N. P. Singh Dhillon, a distinguished geophysicist and former Chief General Manager at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. With over 35 years of experience in the oil and energy sector, he possesses strong expertise in geophysics, Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP), and petrophysics, with significant contributions to both onshore and offshore seismic data acquisition and interpretation. He holds a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

A brief introduction of the guest speaker was given by Prof. Dr. A. R. Chaudhary, Chairperson, Department of Geology. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. A. R. Chaudhary; Dr. Manisha Sandhu, Faculty Advisor, KUGS; Dr. R. B. S. Yadav, Co-Faculty Advisor, KUGS; Dr. Sushil Kumar; and Dr. Atul Jhajharia.
Dr. N P Singh introduced the concept of Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) and explained its fundamental principles. He highlighted its advantages over conventional seismic methods, particularly in terms of higher resolution and improved depth accuracy. He further discussed the different types of VSP, namely zero-offset, offset, and walkaway VSP, along with the essential steps involved in data acquisition. The applications of VSP in hydrocarbon exploration, reservoir analysis, and subsurface interpretation were also outlined.
The session concluded with selected case studies, providing practical insights into the application of VSP techniques. The seminar proved to be insightful, engaging, and academically beneficial for the students.
The programme concluded with the presentation of a memento to him as a token of appreciation, followed by a group photograph.
