Abstract

Conventional interpretation of post stack migrated data from Kuthalam prospect of Cauvery basin predicted cut and fill type of depositional setup. The area is mainly gas producing environ from the Andimadam formation of Lr.Cretaceous age. Few wells drilled in the area produced oil from the same unit. This dissimilarity in the hydrocarbon fluid distribution could not be explained with the existing depositional model. Pre Stack Imaging in time and depth was attempted on regional 2D lines, as the study area falls in under-imaged zone in the 3D survey. The results indicated different type of entrapment model for the oil pool encountered in one of the wells drilled in the area. The prevailing geological model was refined on the basis of the imaging results. The updated model coupled with stratigraphic inversion of available 3D migrated volume satisfactorily explained the oil /gas pool limits.
