Abstract

The Tura Formation of Late Paleocene to Early Eocene in North Assam Shelf is a classic example of depositional history transitioning from a continental alluvial fan system to a shallow marine setting. Hydrocarbon production has traditionally been confined to the upper part of Tura deposited in a shallow marine setting. The recent discovery of hydrocarbons in the lower part of Tura- deposited during Late Paleocene has generated renewed interest in deeper stratigraphic plays. Occurrence of kaolinite - an indicator of intense chemical weathering under warm and humid climate, sedimentological studies and electro log signatures of braided and multilateral shifting fluvial channels indicated the deposition of Lower Tura in a humid alluvial fan setting. Exploration efforts in Lower Tura continue to face significant challenges primarily due to limited seismic imaging, quality of available electro-log data and low success rate. This paper explains an attempt made using High Resolution sequence stratigraphic framework integrated with advanced seismic attributes to quantitatively characterize the spatial distribution of reservoir sands in Tura. The present study is an attempt to bring out suitable locales with better reservoir facies which in turn will enable better decision making and judicious planning of future exploration activities in Lower Tura in Upper Assam shelf
