Paleogeographic variations through Cenozoic era in Mumbai Offshore Basin- India, A foraminiferal biostratigraphic approach

Abstract


Mumbai Offshore Basin is located on the western continental margin of India. Basins geological history is marked by a complex interplay of rifting, volcanic activity, sedimentation, and tectonics01. It evolved in the Cenozoic through rifting and breakup of Seychelles from India in early Cenozoic, post Deccan Trap volcanics, followed by first marine transgression and westward tilt due to Himalayan orogeny. In this study, age boundaries are exclusively demarcated on the basis of identified microfaunal records, starting from Turborotalids in Paleocene to Globigerionoides and Orbulinids in Middle Miocene02&03. Paleogeographic maps are prepared at different stratigraphic levels based on the interpretation of available biofacies and sedimentary lithofacies data recorded. The paleobathymetric changes are one of the most important events of boundary conditions reflected in the depositional cycles over different stratigraphic levels. Paleoenvironment spanning Paleocene to Middle Miocene varies from deeper shelf in the west to shallow marine and swampy/coastal in the eastern part of the basin. The tectonic activities, the existing paleo-highs and lows have dynamically shaped the basin in present day landscape. Fauna recorded in different formations are a result of this. Maps generated can be reworked to enhance and precise the tops and geomorphology in the coming years.
