Abstract

Unlike fossil fuels, which contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation, geothermal energy harnesses the Earth’s internal heat to produce electricity and provide direct heating with minimal emissions. Therefore, a project, in collaboration with Frontier Basins, ONGC, was conceived with an objective of API of gravity, magnetic (GM) & magneto-telluric (MT) data for assessment of geothermal energy potential in Tapovan, Joshimath, Uttarakhand. Accordingly, data was acquired, processed as per the standard industry practices by applying various corrections to generate Bouguer gravity anomaly, magnetic anomaly, 2D resistivity model and other attribute maps. The studies (Gravity, Magnetic & MT) have together deciphered a zone of high density, low magnetic susceptibility and high resistivity in south eastern part of the study area that qualifies the zone as most prospective for further geothermal exploration in the region.
