The “Low Frequency Passive Seismic (LFPS)” analysis is an emerging technology and used to identify hydrocarbon reservoirs. This technique leverages the spectral modifications of naturally occurring passive seismic waves within the frequency range of 1-6 Hz, caused by their interaction with multi-phase fluid present in the porous medium. Several successful case studies have been reported globally, citing successful implementation of the LFPS technique for mitigation of exploration risk. A pilot study in collaboration with Oil India Limited (OIL) and Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, India has been carried out to assess the feasibility of the LFPS technique in the Assam shelf basin of India. The present study discusses the results of the feasibility analysis undertaken over the proven oil and gas field of the Assam shelf basin. The 50 well sites with known hydrocarbon results have been identified to validate the results. Various attributes like V/H ratio, power spectral density (PSD) etc. were calculated to interpret the results. This paper will cover only five selected representative sites for the discussion of calculated attributes and validation with known drilled well information. This method can be considered as a prospect ranking tool, but its validation and uses in the Indian E&P industry are still under research
