Paleogene period played a key role in regulating the sedimentary dynamics vis-a-vis petroleum system of the Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Kutch Basins of northwestern India. The present study highlights the interplay between tectonic activity, sedimentation patterns, and paleo-climatic conditions during the Middle Palaeocene and Middle Eocene ages. Middle Palaeocene strata occurs as reservoir as well as source rock in Jaisalmer and Barmer basins, while the Middle Eocene predominantly functions as a cap rock across these basins. Through the creation of regional Gross Depositional Environment (GDE) and facies maps, the study delineates depositional environments and litho-facies boundaries, revealing a transition from fluvial to marine settings in Jaisalmer, compartmentalized lacustrine and turbidite systems in Barmer, and lagoonal conditions in Kutch. The findings attempt to explain the influence of the paleogeographic position of Indian plate on sedimentation. Jaisalmer and Kutch basins demonstrate genetic relationship of a passive margin set-up while Barmer basin exhibits an extensional rift-related dynamics, during Paleogene. The study attempts to enhance the understanding of the petroleum system elements within these basins, having significant implications for future hydrocarbon exploration.
