Delineation of Mesozoic Sediments in Kerala Konkan Offshore by integrated analysis of Gravity, CSEM, Seismic and well data

Abstract


A wide NW-SE continental shelf of Western Indian continental margin hosts several sedimentary basins from north to south, these are Kutch Basin, Saurashtra Basin, Mumbai Basin, Konkan Basin and Kerala Basin. Understanding the Mesozoic sequence remains a challenge due to poor subsurface imaging below thick basalt in these offshore basins. The thick basalt is opaque and masks deeper seismic events below the basalt. Only a few wells have penetrated and drilled below the basalt till date. An attempt has been made to estimate thickness of Trap and Mesozoic sediments and understand basement configuration with the help of available gravity and other G&G data in offshore areas of Kerala-Konkan Basin. The present study involves integration of gravity, CSEM & MMT, seismic and wells data available in the study areas along with other available G&G data. Based upon seismic and well constrained gravity modelling results, depth relief map of basement and trap top along with thickness maps of trap and Mesozoic sediments have been prepared for study area. The study infers significant presence of thick Mesozoic sediments in the study area falling in offshore Kerala Konkan basin and suggests fair opportunities for Mesozoic exploration in the region
