The basalt-affected offshore basins of India remain a target for exploration and development. Over the last twenty years, many solutions have been proposed, with some success. Whilst this conclusion might be surprising to some, it's not solutions that are the issue; it’s the scale of the task: to map and understand the basalt and the potential hydrocarbon traps that exist below it over a vast area, 580,000km2 , to be exact (DGH Annual Report 2024-2025, Figure 1). This paper will demonstrate that we can answer some basic questions, like basalt thickness, that can be used to narrow down the application of the existing solutions, namely 3D broadband seismic data, for the next stage of exploration -well location and a reliable prognosis.
