Forward Stratigraphic Modelling (FSM) of Panna and Bassein Formations: Insights from the North of Mukta area of Mumbai Offshore Basin, India

Abstract


The study presents a comprehensive application of Forward Stratigraphic Modelling (FSM) to reconstruct and predict the stratigraphic evolution of the Panna and Bassein Formations in the North of Mukta area, Mumbai Offshore Basin. Using DionisosFlow software of M/s Beicip-Franlab, a deterministic 4D model was developed, integrating key geological parameters like paleobathymetry, eustasy, sediment supply, fluvial discharge, carbonate production, transport dynamics along with the depth maps over a 31 million year interval (65 – 34 Ma). The FSM results successfully replicated the broad stratigraphic architecture of the area. The Panna Formation shows the syn-rift channel morphologies and transgression in the top part whereas Bassein Formation depicts carbonate platform transitioning into clastics towards north because of clastics influx from the Tapti-Daman sector. Calibration of the output of FSM against the isopach map generated from depth maps and well based facies show strong correlation in terms of thickness and disposition. Although FSM is limited by its inability to resolve fine-scale heterogeneities, it proved to be a valuable tool for visualizing sediment dispersal and facies architecture. The approach provides robust insights into the evolution of this prolific hydrocarbon province, enhancing our understanding of sedimentary processes and stratigraphic development at the regional scale.
