Abstract

The global energy transition requires the development of innovative approaches to mitigate carbon emissions and diversify the global energy mix. Among emerging solutions, white hydrogen— naturally occurring hydrogen generated through geologic processes—has gained increasing attention as a potential clean energy solution. Exploration and Production (E&P) companies, with their advanced subsurface expertise, established infrastructure, and technological capabilities, are uniquely positioned to play a pivotal role in advancing the white hydrogen economy. This paper investigates how E&P companies can effectively leverage their expertise in seismic imaging, drilling technologies, reservoir characterization, and geotechnical risk assessment to accelerate the exploration and production of natural hydrogen. It further examines the adaptation of conventional hydrocarbon exploration workflows to hydrogen systems. Additionally, the study explores the environmental advantages of white hydrogen exploitation, and viable economics for portfolio diversification within the low-carbon economy. By drawing conceptual parallels between hydrocarbon systems and natural hydrogen occurrences, and incorporating insights from recent global case studies, this work outlines a strategic framework for E&P companies aiming to lead in the emerging white hydrogen sector.
