In its continued effort to provide geoscientists with a platform for knowledge sharing and to disseminate the latest technological advancements, the Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), India, in collaboration with APG-India, organized a knowledge-sharing session on 6th September 2024 at the Technical Interaction Centre (TIC), 2nd Floor, GEOPIC, ONGC Dehradun.
Mr. Adrian Smith, Chief Technical Officer at Sharp Reflections, United Kingdom, delivered a presentation on ‘Quality Assurance of Pre-Stack Seismic- Where are the pitfalls?’ With over 32 years of industry experience, Mr. Smith is a highly respected geoscientist.

Welcome of Mr.Adrian Smith by Shri A K Nauriyal, GGM (Geophy-S) & Vice-President SPG-India; Shri J. P. G. Dobriyal, GGM(Geol)-HoI-GEOPIC & Secretary APG-India; Shri Ranbir Singh, GGM (Geophy-S) Head-Processing, GEOPIC; Shri M K Nath, CGM(Geophy-S)-Basin Manager Frontier Basin.
In his talk, Mr. Adrian Smith covered a wide range of topics, emphasizing the critical role of the quality control process in pre-stack seismic conditioning. He explained how this process ensures that, post-conditioning, the pre-stack data is free from unwanted noise, preserves coherent signals, enhances event continuity, and aligns with the expected AVO gradient. Mr. Smith highlighted several key pitfalls in pre-stack seismic quality assurance, such as inaccurate velocity models, poor signal-to-noise ratios, insufficient data coverage, improper noise filtering, incorrect processing parameters, lack of validation against well data, and misinterpretation of complex geological features. He noted that these issues can result in unreliable interpretations of subsurface structures and reservoir properties if not carefully managed throughout data acquisition and processing. Concluding the session, Mr. Smith stressed the importance of implementing rigorous quality checks at every stage—from acquisition to interpretation—integrating detailed geological information to guide the process, and regularly comparing seismic data with well logs to ensure accuracy.
