SPG India, Kolkata Chapter Organizes Quiz Competition for Students

The Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), Kolkata Chapter proudly organized an engaging and intellectually stimulating Quiz Competition for the students of Jadavpur University and Calcutta University, aimed at promoting academic excellence and encouraging a spirit of healthy competition among aspiring geoscientists. The event was also focussed on discussing role of Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG) in shaping the academic and professional journey of students interested in geosciences and energy exploration. Shri Rajiv Paul, President, SPG Kolkata Chapter, highlighted that objectives of this premier scientific society SPG also focuses on serving as a bridge between academia and industry, offering students invaluable opportunities to grow, learn, and connect with experts in the field (Fig.1).

The quiz was conducted by Shri Rahul Kumar Singh, Treasurer, SPG-Kolkata Chapter and it witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, showcasing their knowledge in Geophysics, Geology, current affairs, and technical advancements in the energy sector.

Held on 6th August 2025, the quiz was conducted in combined mode of online and offline having two rounds, designed to test both speed and accuracy. The atmosphere was engaging, filled with anticipation and excitement as students vied for the top spots.

The quiz was not just a test of knowledge, but also an opportunity for students to interact, learn, and be inspired. SPG Kolkata Chapter’s office bearers including President, Vice-President and Secretary graced the event, sharing valuable insights and motivating students to pursue excellence in the field of petroleum geosciences.

Ms. Meghna Das, Ms. Paoli Mukhopadhyay and Mr. Sudeb Lo - students of B.Sc. (Hons.) in Geological Sciences at Jadavpur University, Kolkata secured the first, second and third positions respectively.

Certificates and gift vouchers were handed over to the top three students by Shri Rajiv Paul, President, SPG- Kolkata Chapter (Fig.2). The success of the quiz reinforced SPG’s commitment to encourage young minds to explore, excel, and make a career in the exciting world of petroleum industry.

The event concluded with a few words of appreciation, motivation and future guidance by Shri Vivek Kumar Singh, Secretary, SPG-Kolkata Chapter followed by informal yet intellectually engaging discussion between students and SPG office bearers over high tea.
